Chef’s Kiss

Reflections

In John 4, we read about the woman at the well in Samaria. I love how the text illustrated the humanity of God in verse 6, where it said (paraphrasing) Jesus got tired from His long journey. Hebrews 4:15, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” I digress..

Jesus meets this Samaritan woman, and the Samaritans had a historical beef with the Jews because they were “mix-raced.” Can we pause for a minute and realize that we will never know the woman at the well’s name, but we will always know her story. And her story continues to be told as a memorial to her name..

Jesus tells her about those who drink from the well will be thirsty again, but if they drink His living water, they will never thirst. Fast forward to a moment when Jesus was on the cross and for the 1 moment in time, ever, He was disconnected from the Father was when He bore our sin debt. In that moment He said the words, ” I thirst.” So the moment we sin, we transgress, we look away from God we become thirsty!! When we take our eyes off of Jesus, we began to drown like Peter! Like many of us would have been, the woman asked Jesus to give her this water so she may not thirst. Jesus said in John 4:16,” Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, I have no husband, 18 for you have had five husband’s, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

Jesus dropped a whole truth bomb on her, but it did it with such grace. Colossians 4:6 says “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” Jesus didn’t come at the woman in a accusatory demor. He did not say, you are going to hell, if you don’t repent. Jesus came to save the world, not condem it. Salt preserves. The words of Jesus preserved this woman’s life. His words were seasoned just right.. chef’s kiss 👨🏽‍🍳 A lot of times we find ourselves thirsty and we go back to that same ol well, hoping it will quench our thirst, but it doesn’t. It is like a broken cistern. The woman had 5 husbands. After each one she must of thought in her heart, surely this time it will be different. This time, this person will fulfill my needs..

The slogan for Spirte is “obey your thirst” but thats what got us in the dry desert in the first place. We will only be satisfied when we have His living water living inside of us.

Help me to become like Mary, Lord, sitting at Your feet. In your presence.
